WOMEN WORLD CUP: NEW ZEALAND THRASH INDIA BY 62 RUNS

(The Quiver): In the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup, India locked horns against the mighty New Zealand and they opted to bowl first after winning the toss. New Zealand put on a total of 260 runs and in reply India were bowled out at 198 runs in 46.4 overs.

Harmanpreet Kaur starred with the bat as she made 71 runs and Mithali Raj scored 31 runs but could not take the team to the finish line as India lost the match by 62 runs. For New Zealand, Satterthwaite smashed half-centuries, while Katey Martin also contributed with a valuable 41 to power the hosts to a 250 plus score.

The World Cup match between India and New Zealand was played at Seddon Park, Hamilton. Indian captain Mithali Raj decided to bowl after winning the toss. NZ was off to a good start, courtesy of steady knocks from captain Sophie Devine (35) and Emilia Kerr (50). After Devine’s departure, Satterthwaite stitched a solid stand with Kerr and scored 75 runs individually to help New Zealand score 260/9 in the stipulated 50 overs.

Pooja Vastrakar was the pick of Indian bowlers as she bagged 4 wickets, Rajeshwari Gaikwad picked 2 wickets and Jhulan Goswami and Deepti Sharma got one wicket apiece.Chasing the target of 261 runs, Team India did not get a good start. Mithali Raj, Yastika Bhatia, and Harmanpreet Kaur played some solid knocks but they weren’t enough for the win. Harmanpreet Kaur scored 71 runs in 63 balls, while captain Mithali Raj was dismissed for 31 runs. Lee Tahuhu and Emilia Kerr took 3 wickets each for New Zealand. In the end, India was bundled out for 198 runs in 46.4 overs.
