HOW MUCH RELIABLE IS YOUR AADHAR CARD? WHAT SHOCKING REVELATIONS CAG MADE ABOUT AADHAR CARD? : Learn in detail

Your Aadhaar may be duplicate ?Does Aadhaar card maintains your data privacy? well these are some of the serious allegations brought by Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India on Unique identification authority of India(UIDAI) . It is to inform all our readers that over 4.7 Aadhaar cards are cancelled for being duplicates. If our Aadhaar cards are not authentic enough then why the government of India wasted a hub of money on rolling out this unique identification program called Aadhaar card , if our Aadhaar cards have no uniqueness.

The country’s top auditor, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India, has strike on the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) over a range of problems related to the issuing of Aadhaar cards.

CAG has targeted UIDAI for the deficient of data management of Aadhaar cards . Serious questions are raised on data privacy when it comes to unique identification program of Aadhaar cards which are now provided to almost all residents of the country .


UIDAI  is the statutory authority established in 2016 to issue Aadhaar to all resident of the country. As per data reports of October 31, 2021, UIDAI had issued 131.68 crore Aadhaar numbers.

 These deficient data management fault of UIDAI’s is exposed at such a time when the country is severely depended upon on the 12 digit unique number of Aadhaar cards . It has  become essential for people starting from minor to major purposes . Basically the BPL people who need their Aaadhar identification numbers to get the benefits of the free schemes and other services provided by government of India.

In its first ever performance audit report of the UIDAI dated April 6, CAG has examined the UIDAI’s functioning between 2014-15 to 2018-2019 and has flagged a range of concerns. These are:

Cannot confirm the residential informations of people as defined in the Aaadhaar Act
UIDAI ‘s Aaadhar card informations could not confirm whether the card holders are residents of the country with own proper document or not.

Duplication of Aadhaar
The CAG indicated the Duplication of Aaadhar . Aadhaars with the same biometric data are owned by different individuals leading to duplication process.

Issue of Aadhaars on faulty biometrics and documents  

Poor and faulty biometric capture process led to thousands of people paying a fee to update their biometrics.

 UIDAI’s Inadequate Biometric data management system

CAG stated there are many flaws in the biometric capture process, UIDAI was maintaining one of the largest Biometric Databases in the world, it did not have a data archiving policy, which is considered “A vital storage management Best Practice”.

Mismatched Aadhaar card numbers of card holders

It has also criticized the authority for “deficient data management” as cases are found when data of Aadhaar card holders have not matched with their Aadhaar numbers even after 10 years.

Absence of Data analysing system

The absence of a system to analyse the factors lead to authentication errors , like spelling errors in cardholders names and other data , manipulation in their date of birth and address led them to further correct it paying an additional amount.

UDIAI’s inadequate arrangements with Postal department

Even UIDAI did not have adequate arrangements with the postal department due to which a large number of Aadhaar cards were returned back to the government.

Data protection

CAG audit report also mentions that UIDAI should frame a suitable data archival policy to lower the risk of vulnerability of Datas.

If the country’s  most primary identification card , Aadhaar has such serious faults , which Id proofs can be considered as authentic and  how will the government of India will rectify these severe mistakes in Aadhaar card are the matters of serious concerns.
