(The Quiver) : Labourers play a vital role for developmental growth of a country without this human resource no country can reach to the peak of growth and industrial development. International Labour Day is celebrated in the honour of labourers and the working classes. It takes place every year on May 1.The day is also commonly known around the globe as May Day.

Google Doodle is honouring the day today with a purple-coloured doodle that has little details like rubber gloves, stethoscope, safety helmets, batteries, nuts and bolts, painting roll-ons, wires, glasses to light torches.

History of Labour Day

The Labour Day has its origins from In US, a union of workers had announced a general strike in 1886 for an 8-hour workday instead of a 16-hour workday. To control the crowd, the policemen started shelling and many workers were killed and a few were injured.Besides it, the labourers protested against draconian labour laws, workers’ rights violations, poor working conditions.

The first Labour Day celebration in India was organised in Madras (now Chennai) by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan on May 1, 1923.Labour Day is celebrated throughout India under a variety of titles, including ‘Kamgar din’ or ‘Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas’ in Hindi, ‘Uzhaopalar Naal’ in Tamil and ‘Kamgar Diwas’ in Marathi. 

May Day celebrates the contribution and sacrifice of workers to and for society. May Day tributed to workers’ struggles and subsequent empowerment in the late 19th century.  But this sections in the society are the most exploited ones, inspite of the countless hard efforts they put towards the progress of a country.
