Bhubaneswar (The Quiver) : World No Tobacco Day is observed on May 31 every year to highlight the risk associated with the use of tobacco. The annual campaign is an opportunity to raise awareness to help reduce use and protect the health of the people.

According to WHO, tobacco use kills more than 8 million people around the world each year. Smoking any kind of tobacco reduces lung capacity and increases the severity of respiratory diseases. Tobacco contains are found not only in Bidi, Cigarettes, Hookahs but also other consuming things like Paan and Guthka also contains tobacco which causes diseases like cancers.

According to WHO, some beneficial health changes that take place are:

  • Within 20 minutes, your heart rate and blood pressure drop.
  • In 12 hours, the carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal, and in 2- to 12 weeks, your lung function increases.
  • In 1 to 9 months, coughing and shortness of breath decrease and in 1 year, your risk of coronary heart disease is about half that of a smoker.
