Historic Sargar Gives India Its First Medal At CWG 2022

(The Quiver): On Saturday, India’s Sanket Sargar becomes the first Indian to win a silver in the Commonwealth Games 2022. The Maharashtra born weightlifter was participating in the 55 kg with a total of 248 kg (113kg in snatch, 135kg in clean and jerk) weightlifting event in Birmingham.

Malaysian Aniq Mohamad won the gold with the total of 249 kg (107kg in snatch, 142kg in clean and jerk).

Sanket Sargar, the national champion, was one of the favourites to bring home a gold for India in weightlifting, which has historically been a major source of medals at Commonwealth Games. Sagar was also the Khelo India Youth Games and the Khelo India University Games champion in 2020.

After starting wrestling at the age of 13, has a history of placing third at important international competitions, such the 2021 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships. Sargar helps his father who runs a paan shop and food stall in Sangil Maharashtra.

Dilanka Yodage of Sri-Lanka won the bronze medal with a total of 225kg.
