23-year old National Record Holder Wins Silver In Long Jump

(The Quiver): On Thursday, After delivering his best jump of 8.08m, India’s Murali Sreeshankar clinched the silver medal in the men’s long jump to give India its second medal in the athletics at the Commonwealth Games.

He joins Suresh Babu as the second male to take home a medal in the CWG’s long jump competition. Suresh Babu won India’s bronze medal in 1978.

Laquan Nairn of Bahamas took the gold medal while Jovan van Vuuren of South Africa won the bronze with 8.06m.

Nairn and Sreeshankar were tied at 8.08 metres, however per the regulations, if two players are tied at the same distance, the player with the stronger second effort is ranked higher.

PM Modi heaped praise on 23-year-old M. Sreeshankar for winning the silver medal in the long jump competition.

After winning bronze in the 2018 Asian U-20 Championship in Japan, Sreeshankar’s silver was his first in multi-sport event.
