17-year old Indian girl becomes U-20 Women’s World Champion

(The Quiver): On Friday, After defeating Atlyn Shagayeva in the 53 category, 17-year Antim Panghal won gold at the final of U20 World Wrestling Championships, becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to do so.

Panghal faced Ukrainian Nataliia Klivchutska in the semi-final match, and she won the match decisively with a score of 11–2. Kazakstan’s Altyn Shagayeva in the championship final in Bulgaria.

“I was unaware of the record. My coaches didn’t inform me that I was the first Indian woman wrestler to ever win the championships until after I had won the final. I am grateful to my parents to allowing me to pursue wrestling, a special thanks goes to my sister who always supported and motivated me throughout my life.” Antim said.

In other hand, After losing to Nonoka Ozaki in the 62 kg final, Sonam Malik had to settle for silver.

Hailing from Haryana, Panghal won Bronze at the Cadet World Championships in 2021 and gold at the Asian Junior Championships in 2022.

Deepak Punia, Ramesh Kumar, Palwinder Singh Cheema, and Pappu Yadav were the other Indian wrestlers who had previously won U20 World Championship titles.
