Iran to Become a Full Member of This Organisation; Know More

(The Quiver): Iran is set to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) as a permanent member in 2023, when India will take over as the chairmanship in the bloc. To attend the SCO leadership summit, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi arrived in Samarkand on Wednesday. He was the first Iranian head of state to travel to Uzbekistan in 20 years.

“Most crucially, we will sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Iran, which will allow Iran to join the SCO fully in 2023 under India’s leadership, assuming all the conditions are met.” National coordinator of Uzbekistan Rahmatulla Nurimbetov said.

Earlier, Iran had signed a commitment document for member state status which was revealed by Foreign Minister of Iran Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

This summit will be historic with India will be chairing for the first time.

In addition to the traditional areas of security and stability, such as development, digital transformation, connectivity, and economics, we are prepared for the SCO’s transformation with a very strong package of documents. He added.

In June 2005, Iran was given observer status within the group. After nearly 15 years, its request for full membership was finally granted in September of last year at the summit in Tajikistan.

Founded in 2001, The SCO bloc, a political, economic, and security alliance, was established by China, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. It is acknowledged as the largest regional Organisation in the world.
