Veteran Politician Mulayam Singh Yadav passes away at 82

(The Quiver): Mulayam Singh Yadav, founder of Socialist Party and former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh passed away in Gurugram this morning. He was 82 years old at the time of his death.

According to reports, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav was admitted to Medanta Hospital on August 22 due to illness. He was shifted to the CCU on October 1st as his health deteriorated there. After a day’s stay there, he was being treated in the ICU.

Mulayam Singh, who was born on November 22nd, 1939, initially served as an MLA in 1967. When Mulayam Singh was serving his second term as an MLA, then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi proclaimed the Emergency, sending him to prison among other opposition leaders.

Throughout his lengthy career, he belonged to a number of political organisations, including the Sanyukt Socialist Party of his mentor Ram Manohar Lohia, the Bharatiya Kranti Dal of Charan Singh, the Bharatiya Lok Dal, and the Samajwadi Janata Party.

In 1992, he established the Samajwadi Party. Mulayam Singh Yadav briefly ran for prime minister in 1996 when opposition groups sought to create a non-BJP rival to the Congress.

He was elected 10 times as an MLA and as an MP, he was elected 7 times.

Many political leaders have expressed grief over his demise.
