Giorgia Meloni Becomes Italy’s First Female Prime Minister

(The Quiver): On Friday, Italy’s new ruling coalition was established by Giorgia Meloni, making her the first woman to be chosen as prime minister and handing the nation its first far-right-led administration since the conclusion of World War II.

With Mario Draghi’s coalition breaking in July, and Meloni, whose party received the greatest percentage of the vote, succeeded him. On Saturday, the leader of the post-fascist Brothers of Italy party will be formally sworn in as the country’s prime minister.

“We’re prepared to establish this country’s administration as soon as possible” Meloni said.

As a young activist with the neo-fascist Italian Social Movement, which was started by supporters of the dictator Benito Mussolini, Meloni joined politics in 1992.

She revealed a coalition government on Friday, supported by Forza Italia, the political party of former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi and Matteo Salvini’s League.

Giancarlo Giorgetti, a member of the League, will be the finance minister, and Antonio Tajani, Forza Italia’s second-in-command and a seasoned member of the European Parliament, will be the foreign minister.

A “cornerstone” of Meloni’s administration will be the support for NATO and Europe.
