Spirited India Defeat Australia to win 3rd Sultan of Johor Cup

(The Quiver): On Saturday, after breaking their five-year old title drought, India defeated Australia 5-4 in a penalty shootout to win their third Sultan of Johor Cup.

Both teams were squared with 1-1 each in the full time.

During the 14th minute of the match, Sudeep Chirmako scored India’s first goal. However, Australia’s Jack Holland scored much need goal to put the score line 1-1.

Both teams tied each other 3-3 in the shootout, putting the game into sudden death.

In addition to Vishnukant Singh, Ankit Pal, and Sudeep Chirmako scoring goals for India, Uttam Singh scored twice in the shootout, including in sudden death.

Burns Cooper, Foster Brodee, Brooks Joshua, and Hart Liam scored goals for Australia.

The Indians have finished second four times, in 2012, 2015, 2018, and the most recent competition in 2019 while winning the championship in 2013 and 2014.

In 2020 and 2021, the competition was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
