Retired IAS Officer Arun Goel Appointed as Election Commissioner

(The Quiver): On Saturday, Arun Goel, a retired bureaucrat, has been chosen to serve as an Election Commissioner in Gujarat before the state’s important assembly election. For almost six months, the third position in the nation’s premier poll body has remained unfilled.

Mr. Goel, a 1985-class Punjab cadre officer, will serve on the election panel with Rajiv Kumar who is the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey.

Mr. Goel served as the secretary for heavy industries and the union minister of culture. He was scheduled to retire on December 31, 2022, but on November 18, he voluntarily decided to retire.

According to law governing their appointment, terms of service, and retirement, an election commissioner (EC) or chief election commissioner (CEC) may maintain office for six years or until they reach the age of 65.
