125th BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LION OF PUNJAB- LALA LAJPAT RAI

(The Quiver) :Today is the 125th birth anniversary of  the great Indian leader, Freedom fighter, author , politician  Lala Lajpat Rai . It can be undoubtedly said he was a man of multi talents. On his birth anniversary , leaders across the political spectrum paid rich tributes to the lion of Punjab . Rai had played a central role in the country’s independence struggle against the British Raj.

Rai is one among the popular trio – ‘Lal Bal Pal’ ,the other two are Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal. Rai is popularly known by name Punjab Kesari and The Lion Of Punjab.

Rai was born in 1865 in the Ludhiana  district of Punjab. He recieved his education in law and was a founding member of  the Bar council of Hisar. Besides this he was also the founder of many other organisations including the Hisar congress . In 1928, Rai led a non-violent march against the Simon Commission set up by the British and gave the movement a slogan ‘ Simon Go Back’. He also suffered from severe injuries after police lathi-charged the protesters . The lion of Punjab took his last breathe his last in November 1928.

Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot said that Rai’s courage and sacrifices shall inspire generations to come.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said Rai’s thoughts and dedication towards the country “still inspire us all”.
