SUPREME COURT REPLY TO GREEDY DOWRY SEEKERS

(The Quiver) : A bride is burned every 90 minutes for dowry issues, 1.4 deaths per year per 100,000 women in India are sacrificed in the fire of Dowry. In 2020,reported dowry death cases in India amounted to nearly seven thousand.

Such a case taken to Supreme Court ,Today , the Supreme Court rejected the bail plea of a man accused in a dowry harassment and death case of his wife.

Arguing for the bail plea, the advocate of the accused claimed that the man had no antecedents. The Supreme Court countering on this plea said , “ What antecedents? Do you want (the accused) to marry someone every year and kill his wife?”

The Supreme Court stated that they are not inclined to grant bail at this stage and asked for the trial to begin.

 Dowry Prohibition Act enacted on May 1, 1961, intended to prevent the giving or receiving of a dowry. Under the Dowry Prohibition Act, dowry includes property, goods, or money given by either party to the marriage, by the parents of either party, or by anyone else in connection with the marriage. The dowry Prohibition Act is applied to persons of all religions in India. Inspite of, imposition of all these laws meant for stopping social evil of society, no productive results could be marked till date.
