INDIA  SUPPORTS RUSSIA , ABSTAINED ON UNSC RESOLUTION AGAINST RUSSIA

(The Quiver) : India on Saturday abstained on the United Nations security Council resolution against Russia. Remaining in neutral state, India is prepared to call out Russia’s needless assault on the sovereignty of Ukraine and demanded complete and unconditional withdrawal of Russian forces from the neighbouring country.

The resolution, which was prepared and moved by the US in partnership with Albania, received 11 votes for motion while India was joined by China and UAE in abstaining from the vote and maintaining a neutral approach to the conflict.

Countries who voted against Russia were France, Britain, US, Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, and Norway , While China, India, and United Arab Emirates abstained on the UNSC council resolution against Russia. All eyes were on how India will cast its vote on the resolution given that New Delhi has strong defence ties with Moscow.

Here’s what India said at the UNSC resolution meeting against Russia.

Addressing the grave situation unfolding on the ground, especially for the Indians stranded in Ukraine, India’s Permanent Representative to UN, TS Tirumurti said, “India is deeply disturbed by the recent turn of developments in Ukraine. We urge that all efforts are made for the immediate cessation of violence & hostilities. No solution can ever arrive at the cost of human lives.”

Meanwhile, Russia used its veto power to reject the resolution that condemns the country’s aggression “in the strongest terms” and called for unconditional withdrawal of its troops from Ukrainian territory. With Moscow’s veto power as a permanent member of the Security Council, the resolution against it became a failure but Western nations said the resolution seeks to show Moscow’s isolation on the global stage for its invasion and actions against Ukraine.
