FISHING BOATS WILL BE BANNED IN MANGALAJODI

Chilika (The Quiver) : Mangalajodi is called as ” The Birds Paradise of Asia “, which is located in the North eastern Part of Chilika Lagoon. Millions of migratory birds congregate here during different seasons of the year. In 2021, around 2.5 lakh birds arrived in Chilika. The marshy wetland with emergent vegetation has become migratory birds favourite destination for roosting and nesting. More than 230 species of birds live in Mangalajodi .But the winged guests used to get disturbed by the sounds emerging from motor fishing boats.

To provide our winged guests an undisturbed ecosystem. Now , the Fishery department and Wildlife department have collectively decided to ban motor fishing boats in Mangalajodi area of Chilika . The concerned departments have taken this decision following an appeal filed by Chilika Development authority (CDA) in High Court to ban fishing motor boats in the area.

This initiative by the fishery department is appreciated everywhere as the biodiversity of the place will remain stable and undisturbed after banning fishing motor boats in the place. The department also has agreed to ban fishing during the arrival and staying seasons of migratory birds.

If we go through the population of birds visiting Mangalajodi in past years, it is found that , in year 2018 around 1 lakh birds had visited Mangalajodi .  In the year 2019 around 1.5 lakh birds visited Mangalajodi , in year 2020 around 2 lakh birds visited the place and in year 2021 around 2.5 birds have visited the area.

It is predicted that the number of birds visiting Mangalajodi will get affected due to distrubance sound created by motor boats. So, earlier precautionary steps are taken for the migratory birds. In past, residents of the area have been campai

If the fishing motor boats are stopped, Mangalajodi can be rightly called as birds paradise.
