Odisha’s Satkosia gets Prestigious Tag as Wetland

(The Quiver): Making it as the third wetland in the state, Odisha’s Satkosia Gorge has been accorded the tag of Ramsar site. It will be the third in the list of Ramsar site after Chilika Lake and Bhitarakanika Mangroves.

After becoming a wildlife sanctuary in 1976, Satkosia spreads along with the wonderful river of Mahanadi. It is considered as the meeting point between two biogeographically regions of India which is Deccan Plateau and Eastern Ghats.

“I’m overjoyed to announce that 10 wetlands have received Ramsar certification as wetlands of international significance. Congratulations to Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Odisha for adding to India’s total of 64 states.”Minister of environment Bhupendra Yadav said.

With a total hectare area of 6,907, it is well known for its unique biodiversity which gets brighter with the presence of fresh water turtles, gharials and many more.

On October 1st 1981, the Ramsar site convention named Chilika Lake as the first India wetland of international importance. The site plays a pivotal role in preserving the ecological bio-diversity of a district.

In order to get more government support for conservation of bio diversity, the Ramsar site will help us significantly. M Yogajayanand said.
