All-Time Great Roger Federer set to Retire from Tennis after Laver Cup

(The Quiver): On Thursday, Roger Federer, a tennis prodigy from Switzerland, has announced that he would retire from the sport after the Laver Cup in 2022. Federer has played more than 1500 matches over the course of his 24-year, trophy-filled career.

Men’s tennis teams from Europe and the rest of the world will compete in the Laver Cup competition. The fifth Laver Cup is played on the indoor hard courts at The O2 Arena in London from September 23 to September 25.

At the 2001 Wimbledon, Federer made his debut at the age of 19, defeating his seven-time champion and childhood idol Pete Sampras. Federer declared himself a future superstar with a victory over the famous Sampras, winning 7-6 (9-7), 5-7, 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), and 7-5.

Federer held the top spot in the world rankings for 310 weeks, including 237 straight weeks between February 2004 and August 2008.

In his illustrious career, Federer has captured eight Wimbledon, six Australian Open, and five US Open championships. The 2009 French Open at Roland Garros was likewise won by the Swiss legend.
