(The Quiver): On Sunday, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake occurred in the southeast coast of Taiwan. A tsunami warning has been issued by Japan as a result of the strong earthquake. The initial strength of the quake was estimated to be around 7.2 as it narrowed down to 6.9 magnitude.

About 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of Taitung city, the earthquake struck at 2:44 p.m.

According to sources, at least one structure collapsed in the town of Yuli. The nation’s capital Taipei also experienced shaking.

When a building containing a convenience store in Yuli collapsed, all four occupants were saved, and three persons whose car slid off a damaged bridge were also saved and sent to the hospital. The Taiwan fire department said.

Due to its location at the meeting point of two tectonic plates, Taiwan is vulnerable to earthquakes.

In 2016, a quake in southern Taiwan claimed the lives of over 100 people, but a 7.3 magnitude quake in 1999 claimed the lives of over 2,000 people.
