Former Education Minister remanded to Judicial Custody till this date; Know More

(The Quiver): Partha Chatterjee, a former education minister for West Bengal, has been placed in judicial detention till October 5 by a special CBI court in Kolkata.

After the Enforcement Directorate’s custody of Chatterjee came to an end, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took custody of him from September 16 to September 21 in order to question him about the suspected irregularities in the hiring of teachers in state-aided schools.

The CBI stated that they no longer desired to hold him in their custody but highlighted the requirement to keep the minister in judicial custody.

I don’t see a point in the CBI’s plea for questioning the minister while he is in judicial custody if the central inquiry agency no longer needs my client’s custody. Said Chatterjee’s lawyer Selim Rahman.

The Calcutta high court denied the CBI’s request to question Chatterjee while he was being held in judicial custody after hearing from both sides since the investigation agency was unable to provide a convincing justification for such a request.

On July 23, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Chatterjee and his alleged close associate Arpita Mukherjee as ED was looking into the alleged money trail in the SSC recruitment scam and seized Rs 49.80 crore in cash as well as bullion, jewellery, and property deeds from the latter’s flats in the city.
