Ulf Kristersson appointed as Sweden’s New Prime Minister

(The Quiver): On Monday, Ulf Kristersson, the president of the conservative party, was chosen as prime minister by Sweden’s parliament. He will form a center-right coalition with a populist party with far-right roots that has pledged to fight crime and limit immigration.

After the election of September 11, his three-party coalition won a majority in the 349-seat Riksdag by joining forces with the Sweden Democrats, a party established by right-extremists in the 1980s.

Last week, Kristersson unveiled a plan in which his moderate party, which is conservative, will work closely with Sweden’s second-largest party, the Sweden Democrats, to coordinate government policies as they form a coalition with the smaller Christian Democrats and Liberals.

After the voting in Stockholm, Kristersson said, “It feels amazing, and I’m grateful.” “I am grateful for the faith the Riksdag has placed in me. The challenges that lie in front of us also humble me.

Magdalena Andersson, the leader of the center-left Social Democrats, who have been in office for eight years and are currently in opposition, will be replaced as prime minister by Kristersson, who has led the Moderates since 2017.
