Former Union minister, ex-MP from Rajasthan and Congress leader Buta Singh passed away at age of 86. The veteran had served as a minister with four Prime Ministers during his nearly six decade-long political career. He died due to a cerebral haemorrhage on 2 January 2021.

India approves COVID-19 vaccine Covishield

Almost a year into the COVID-19 pandemic, India had approved coronavirus vaccine Co-developed by the University of Oxford and British-Swedish company AstraZeneca and known as Covishield, a major step toward halting the spread of the coronavirus. The approvals were announced at a news conference in New Delhi.

Motera Cricket Stadium of Ahmdabad renovated and renamed after Narendra Modi President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday inaugurated the world’s largest cricket arena ,the refurbished Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera ,a state-of-the-art facility which can accommodate an awe-inspiring 1.32 lakh spectators. The stadium, which was earlier named after India’s first deputy prime minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, has been renamed after current prime minister Narendra Modi and will henceforth be known as the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Gujarat Anti-Conversion Law Takes Hit. The Gujarat Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Act, 2021, was notified in the state on June 15. The Act has stringent punishment for forcible religious conversion through marriage and attracts imprisonment of 3 to 5 years and up to Rs 2 lakh fine. If the victim is a minor, a woman, a Dalit or tribal, then the offenders may be punished for a jail term of 4 to 7 years and a fine of no less than Rs 3 lakh.

Senior AajTak TV anchor Rohit Sardana passes away

Television journalist Rohit Sardana died of cardiac arrest on Friday, days after he tested positive for COVID-19. Sardana, who was an executive editor and TV news anchor with Aaj Tak of the India Today Group, is survived by his wife, two daughters and parents.

India announced mass vaccination drive for 18+ age group

Everyone above 18 years of age were eligible to get vaccinated against coronavirus from May 1, the central government said on Monday as it liberalised the vaccination drive to allow states, private hospitals and industrial establishments to procure the doses directly from manufacturers.

Mamata Banerjee elected as the WB CM for the third term consecutively

Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee, whose party secured a dominant win in the recently held assembly elections in West Bengal, took oath as the chief minister for a third term on May 5. Overall, the TMC won 213 of the state’s 294 assembly constituencies, with the BJP winning 77. Counting was held for 292 seats.

Twitter permanently bans Kangana Ranaut’s account

Twitter has permanently suspended Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut’s account for repeated violation of its rules. While it is not clear, which specific tweet landed the actress in trouble. many have speculated that Ranaut’s tweet asking Prime Minister Narendra Modi to “tame” TMC chief Mamata Banerjee might have resulted in her account getting suspended.


Former Union minister and RLD chief Ajit Singh dies of Covid-19 Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief and former Union minister Chaudhary Ajit Singh passed away on May 6 at the age of 82 after battling COVID-19.

Cyclone Yaas hits Odisha and WB coasts

Parts of West Bengal and Northern Odisha were hit by Cyclone Yaas, a relatively strong and very damaging tropical cyclone that hit the country in May. At least 10 million people were affected while 3,00,000 houses were damaged.

Flying Sikh Milkha Singh passed away

One of independent India’s biggest sporting icons, ace sprinter Milkha Singh, died after a month-long battle with COVID-19. The legendary athlete is a four-time Asian Games gold medallist and the 1958 Commonwealth Games champion but his greatest performance remains the fourth-place finish in the 400m final of the 1960 Rome Olympics. His timing of 45.6 sec at the Italian capital remained the national record for 38 years before Paramjeet Singh broke it in 1998. He also represented India in the 1956 and 1964 Olympics and was bestowed the Padma Shri 1959.

Pushkar Singh Dhami sworn in as new Uttarakhand CM In July, Pushkar Singh Dhami was sworn in as the 11th chief minister of Uttarakhand. Dhami (45) is the youngest chief minister of Uttarakhand. Notably, Dhami has never been a minister in the state government.

Legendary actor Dilip Kumar breathes his last aged 98

Legendary actor Dilip Kumar passed away in Mumbai on Wednesday, July 7, 2021. He was suffering from geriatric problems. Born as Yousuf Khan in Peshawar (now Pakistan), he migrated to India post partition and rose to the fame in Bollywood with the screen name Dilip Kumar. He debuted with “Jwar Bhata” in 1944 and his last movie “Qila” came in 1998. In his 5-decades long-acting carrier Kumar gave numerous superhit and memorable movies like Mughal-e-Azam, Yahudi, Ganga-Yamuna, Gopi, Devdas, Naya Daur, Karma, and many more.

The award-winning journalist was killed while covering clashes between Afghan troops and the Taliban in Spin Boldak district of Kandahar city.

Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won silver medal in Toyko Olympic

It was a historic moment for India, as star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu became the first Indian weightlifer to win silver medal in the women’s 49 kg event. Chanu lifted 84kg and 87kg successfully but attempting to lift 89kgs Chanu failed and was placed in the second spot after China’s Hous Zhihu lifted 94kg to create an Olympic record.

Sensational’ Sindhu won bronze medal in Toyko Olympic

India’s ace shuttler PV Sindhu created history as she defeated China’s He Bing Jiao 21-13, 21-15 to clinch a bronze medal in the women’s singles in badminton at Tokyo 2020. Sindhu, who has returned with medals from each of the big-ticket events such as the Commonwealth and Asian Games and the BWF World Tour Finals in the last five years, outwitted eighth seed Bing Jiao 21-13 21-15 to add a bronze to the silver that she had secured at the 2016 Rio Games. She thus became the second athlete after wrestler Sushil Kumar to win two Olympic medals for India in August 1.

Lovlina Borgohain won bronze medal at Tokyo Olympics

Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) signed off with a bronze medal in her debut Olympic Games after a comprehensive 0-5 loss to reigning world champion Busenaz Surmeneli, bringing an end to the country’s campaign in the sport here. Up against quite literally a bully in the ring, Bo rgohain was completely out-punched by the gold medal favourite Turkish boxer, who produced a thoroughly dominating performance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Borgohain on her win, saying her tenacity and determination are admirable.


 Indian men’s hockey team won  bronze medal in Tokyo Olympics The Indian men’s hockey team rewrote history as it claimed an Olympic medal after 41 years, beating a plucky Germany 5-4 to claim the bronze in an edge-of-the-seat play-off match in in the Tokyo Olympics. The last time India stood on the podium was in 1980 Moscow Olympics after winning the gold, their eighth. The Men in Blue showed absolute resilience, strength, and winning spirit to register a remarkable comeback win against a strong German team in the Tokyo Olympics.

Neeraj Chopra brought India gold medal fromTokyo Olympics

Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra created history in 2021 as he became the first from the country to win a gold in track and field in the Olympics. He threw a distance of 87.58m to pick the gold at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics. He is now the second Indian after Abhinav Bindra to win a gold medal in individual events. The Lok Sabha passed the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty Seventh Amendment) Bill 2021 which offers the provision of restoring the power of states and UTs to make their own OBC lists. The Bill was passed with 385 members voting in support and no member opposing it.

Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award renamed after Major Dhyan Chand. India’s highest sporting honour Khel Ratna Award, which was named after former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, was rechristened in the honour of hockey wizard Dhyan Chand following the admirable performance of both men’s and women’s hockey teams in the Tokyo Olympics.

Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). Aryan, along with two others, was apprehended from the Empress ship off the coast of Mumbai on 2 October. Besides Khan, two others – Munmun Dhamecha and Arbaaz Merchant – were arrested. They were booked under sections 8 (c), 20 (b), 27 and 35 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Veteran journalist Vinod Dua The Veteran journalist passes away Veteran journalist Vinod Dua passed away on 4 December at a private hospital, his daughter and actor-comic Mallika Dua announced on her social media page. He was aged 67.

CDS Rawat and 12 others killed in chopper crash Chief of Defence Staff (CDS)  

General Bipin Rawat died in a helicopter crash near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu, the Indian Air Force (IAF) confirmed on the evening of December 8. He was among the 14 people who were on board, including his wife and staff members. Thirteen people have succumbed to the crash, including CDS Rawat, Madhulika Rawat and 11 others.

End of the Farm laws

Three weeks after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the repeal of the three farm laws and days after Parliament officially annulled them, protesting farmers brought the curtains down on their year-long agitation at the Singhu border of Delhi on December 9. The protest had presented an unprecedented political crisis for the NDA Government, including the loss of a key ally, and drawn the attention of the Supreme Court.

India got 3rd Miss Universe title as Harnaaz Sandhu of Chandigarh shines in the beauty pageant held at the Port of Eilat in Israel. The 21-year-old post graduate student from Chandigarh was crowned after beating the contestants from 79 countries. India erupted in pomp and joy as the Miss Universe crown came to the country after 21 years. Before Sandhu, Sushmita Sen had won it in 1994 and Lara Dutta brought it in year 2000.
